Dedication To Nation of Kochi LNG Terminal on 4th January, 2014

Dr. Manmohan Singh, Hon'ble Prime Minister of India today dedicated to the nation the 2nd LNG Terminal of Petronet LNG at Kochi, Kerala. This terminal has been constructed at a cost of around Rs. 4500 Crores which is one of the biggest investments in the State of Kerala in recent times.  The Kochi LNG Terminal can process 5 Million tonnes of Liquid Natural gas(about 18 Million Standard Cubic Meters per day) and holds enormous potential not only for Kerala but for entire Southern region of India as it can spur industrial activities alongside the pipeline network.

On this occasion Prime Minister congratulated the people of Kerala for having this clean and green source of energy and lauded the efforts put in by Petronet LNG for relentlessly pursuing the energy security for the country.

In his address he emphasized that despite country's pursuance for domestic gas production, the country would need to import more gas to keep pace with economic growth. Therefore, the country needs to put in place world class infrastructures at appropriate locations at required timelines.

He, however, emphasized that in order to maintain parity between domestic and imported gas price, market discovered pricing mechanism is the need of the hour. Further, expressing concerns over underutilization of Kochi Terminal, he advised the entire stakeholder to co-operate on pipelines issues so that the project becomes viable and full potential of Kochi Terminal can be exploited.

Speaking on this occasion Sh Oomen Chandy, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Kerala emphasized entrepreneurial business culture and rapid business growth in the State for employment generation for next generation. However, while achieving rapid industrial growth its impact on environment must be kept in mind. Therefore, availability of natural gas through Kochi LNG Terminal is definitely a good initiative for achievement of the State’s vision for prosperity driven by competitive and eco-efficient economy.

Dr. M. Veerappa Moily, Hon'ble Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas and Environment & Forests, presided over the function and said the country is growing and would need all focus of energy and larger imports in addition to domestic production. Therefore, he advised Indian Petroleum Sector companies to secure long-term gas contracts at affordable price keeping in view the market conditions of Asian Sub-continent.

The other dignitaries who were present on the dais were His Execellency Nikhil Kumar, Hon'ble Governor of Kerala, Union Ministers Prof K V Thomas, Minister of State for Consumer Affairs and Food & Pubic Distribution, Smt Panabaka Lakshmi, Minister of State for Petroleum & Natural Gas and Textiles.

A large number of CMDs, Directors and senior officers from companies, bureaucrats and industry leaders from India and the employees participated in the function. Excellent arrangements were made by Petronet LNG Limited at their plant.
